From May 14 to 15, the 14th Regional Structural Design Competition for National College Students i.e. the 13th Structural Design Competition for College Students in Shandong Province were held in Yantai University. The team of international students from the school of international education of our university won the third prize.
The theme of the competition was bridge with no wind brace truss structure. Contestants were required to use specified materials and make models according to relevant requirements, and then carry out loading experiments. Due to the epidemic, in this competition, the model making was carried out online, and the loading experiment was carried out offline. More than 100 contestants from 33 teams and 31 universities in the province took part in the competition.
Under the guidance of associate professor Qu Shuang and teacher Chen Jing, our team with three players, Cheli Paul, Clarvin Magoma Onayo and William Shikufeni of the school of international education from Zambia, Kenya and Namibia Nantana respectively, won the third prize. The students’ work Xianhe Bridge won the judges’ unanimous praise for its simple, beautiful structure and excellent loading performance. It was also the second time that international students won good results in the structural design competition.
Structural Design Competition for College Students in Shandong Province is a high level competition that cultivates students’ innovation ability, design ability, practical ability and comprehensive quality in the discipline of civil engineering. The international students in the competition fully showed the innovation spirit at science and technology, practical ability and consciousness of team cooperation, thus promoting the professional level and boosting the confidence to apply the knowledge into the actual work. International students said that they would take this competition as an opportunity to study theories, practice skills, and strive to become technical talents in infrastructure construction of countries along the “Belt and Road”.
