Introduction to the School of Surveying and Geo-Informatics

The School of Surveying and Geo-Informatics was evolved from Surveying Teaching and Research Section of Department of Civil Engineering. It began to recruit undergraduate students in 2002. The Department of Land Surveying and Information Engineering was established in the School of Civil Engineering in 2008. The current School of Surveying and Geo-Informatics was founded in June, 2016.

The school currently has 63 faculties. 52 are full-time teachers, among which there are 8 professors, 15 associate professors, 3 PhD supervisors and 40 Master’s supervisors. 83% full-time teachers have doctoral degrees.

The school has hired Zhou Chenghu, academician of the State Key Laboratory of GIS of the Institute of Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jin Fengxiang, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, one of the first batch of talents selected for the New Century National Hundred Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, visiting professor of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), as the distinguished professors.

The school now has three undergraduate majors, i.e., Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Geographical Information Science and Remote Sensing Science and Technology. Meanwhile, she has a first-level discipline of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology for master’s degree granting (including three second-level disciplines, i.e., Geodesy and Survey Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering), as well as professional master's degree programs in resources and environment (research fields: surveying, remote sensing and GIS ) and in civil and hydraulic engineering (research fields: engineering surveying and BIM). The school is now planning the joint training on undergraduate and postgraduate students with colleges and universities in Europe, America and Australia. The major of Surveying and Mapping Engineering passed the professional certification of engineering education by the Ministry of Education in 2020, and was approved as the national first-class undergraduate construction discipline in 2021. The major of Geographic Information Science was approved as the provincial first-class undergraduate construction major in 2021.

The school has three teaching and research sections: Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Science; three teaching laboratories: the Laboratory of Engineering Surveying, the Laboratory of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and the Laboratory of Geographic Information System; four research laboratories: the Laboratory of Satellite Navigation and Positioning (GNSS ground base station is included), the Laboratory of Quantitative Remote Sensing, the Laboratory of Urban 3D Image Processing and the Laboratory of Urban Digital Space Simulation; two major scientific research platforms: the Shandong Collaborative Innovation Center for Smart City and Shandong Engineering and Technology Center for Digital City; as well as the Surveying and Land Information Institute and the Remote Sensing and GIS Research Center of Shandong Jianzhu University.

In recent years, the school has published more than 300 academic papers, of which more than 100 have been indexed by the three major retrieving systems, as well as 6 teaching materials and books. The school has been in charge of or participated in more than 10 national scientific research projects, including the National Science-technology Support Program, the National Key R&D Projects and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc., and 20 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, as well as several social service projects, with total scientific research funds of 30 million yuan. The school has been granted with the second prize and the third prize of Science and Technology Progress Award at provincial and ministerial level for three times respectively.

The school now has 936 students on campus, including 825 undergraduate students and 111 postgraduate students. Our students have actively been participating in various national science and technology competitions, and have won more than 30 national awards and 100 provincial wards over the past three years. Our graduates have been widely recognized by society so that the employment rate and quality of employment list top position compared to the similar majors within the province. The admission rate for postgraduate entrance examination has reached more than 30%. Many excellent students have been admitted to renowned universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad to pursue their graduate study, including Wuhan University, Chinese Academy of Sciences and China University of Geosciences, etc., as well as universities in Europe, the United States and Hong Kong.
