The School of Foreign Languages(School of International Education), originating from English Teaching Section of Basic Department founded in 1978, developed into Foreign Language Teaching Department in February 1999, and was named Department of Foreign Languages in April 2000. The Department began its enrollment for English majors in 2000 and for German majors in 2004. The present name was got in April 2006, and the school was granted the right to confer Master’s Degrees for Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) students.
The School is now responsible for the teaching of foreign languages for non-majors, foreign language professionals training, academic research and social services of related disciplines. It now has two undergraduate programs in English and German, one master program in MTI, among which, English major has been listed as the first-class major in Shandong Province. English major has three training directions: English Language and Literature (with architectural characteristics), Cross-border E-commerce (university-enterprise cooperation project), Translation and Localization (university-enterprise cooperation project). German major has two training directions: German Language and Literature (with characteristics of business German) and Cross-border E-commerce (university-enterprise cooperation project). MTI has three directions: English Translation, English Interpreting, and German Translation.
The School consists of English Teaching and Research Section, German Teaching and Research Section and 4 College English Teaching and Research Sections. It has 113 experienced and qualified teaching and administrative staff. Among them, there are 5 professors, 42 associate professors, 24 teachers with PhD degrees, 15 PhD candidates and 60 teachers with overseas studying experiences.
We embrace the motto of “Pursuit of Virtue, Practice and Cross-cultural Learning” and have made great efforts in the advancement of teaching. It now has 1 first-class provincial course, 3 provincial postgraduate quality courses, 3 provincial postgraduate case bases for course teaching, 1 provincial excellent postgraduate supervisor, 3 outstanding teachers of Shandong Jianzhu University, 2 provincial key teaching-reform research projects, and other 20 provincial and ministerial teaching and research projects. The school has obtained 1 second prize of Shandong excellent textbooks for colleges, 1 third prize of provincial postgraduate education teaching achievement award, 1 Shandong typical case of education evaluation and reform, and 6 high-quality curricula and online curricula of Shandong Jianzhu University.
Young teachers in the school have attained remarkable achievements in all kinds of professional competitions at all levels, including National Semifinals Grand Prize, First Prize and Third Prize of the National Finals of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) Star Teacher Contest, Shandong Grand Prize and National Finals Second Prize of SFLEP National Foreign Language Teaching Contest, Second Prize of the National Finals of National Colleges and Universities Foreign Language Curriculum Ideological and Political Teaching Contest and Second Prize of the National Finals of China Micro-courses for Foreign Languages.
We continues to strengthen professional construction, and has obtained a lot of scientific research achievements. Now the School has 1 provincial innovation team, “Youth Innovation Science and Technology Plan”, 1 provincial academic research platform of an art laboratory “International Multi-modal Big Data Mining Laboratory for Construction Engineering”, 7 projects of National Social Science Fund (including projects of Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education), 1 city-school cooperation project of cultivating talents for cross-border e-commerce under the standardization system with “Three-Chain Integration” (with 3 million yuan of project funding), over 20 provincial and ministerial social science planning projects, 1 Shandong Humanities and Social Sciences Award, 3 provincial outstanding scientific research achievement awards, more than 50 academic monographs and translations, and over 200 academic papers, among which more than 20 papers are published in SSCI and CSSCI.
The school has a strong academic culture. Currently it has 992 enrolled students, including 853 undergraduates and 139 postgraduates. The admission rate for postgraduate entrance examination for Classes 2021 and 2022 exceeds 25%. We attach great importance to the “Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition”, and have won 2 national silver awards, 2 national bronze awards, 5 provincial gold awards and 4 provincial silver awards in various competitions such as “Internet +”, “Challenge Cup” and “Creating Youth”. Wang Ya, a 2021 graduate, won the title of “Top Ten Entrepreneurial Stars of University Students in Shandong Province”. “Under the same sky, our hearts are with Gannan”, a charity voluntary group from the school, has been approved by the national special team of “promoting poverty alleviation” and praised by the Ministry of Education and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China. In 2020, Communist Youth League Committee of the school was awarded “Shandong Jianzhu University May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee”. In addition, our students have achieved excellent results in major competitions such as “FLTRP Cup” National English Speaking Contest and National English Competition for College Students.
The school is fully equipped with perfect teaching infrastructure, with 4,000 m2 for teaching, experiment and office, and 16 audio-visual rooms, and language rooms. Its advanced simultaneous interpretation room provides strong technical support for the MTI students and undergraduates majoring English translation and localization. The school library covers 165 m2, with more than 8,000 books, 2,200 audio-visual materials, 85 foreign periodicals and 7 foreign newspapers. In addition, the FM radio station for college English teaching, the satellite TV program receiving system and the university English teaching LAN are integrated to form the university’s foreign language teaching equipment system, creating a good learning environment for students to learn foreign languages independently.
Relying on the discipline advantages of architecture and civil engineering of Shandong Jianzhu University and consolidating the professional foundation of students as a starting point, the school creates a “Foreign Language +” talent cultivating model, highlights the professional characteristics of “English+ Architecture”, “English+Cross-border E-commerce”, “English+Translation and Localization”, “German+Economics and Trade”, “German+Cross-border E-commerce” and other professional characteristics, and adopts university-enterprise cooperation, China-foreign cooperation and the establishment of second major for cultivating talents, in order to open wide channels for their employment. The school cultivates students in cooperation with Shandong Zhibo Education Technology Co., LTD., Gllinking Information Technology Co., Ltd., Jinan Dingshang Information Technology Co., LTD., and other corporations, which truly makes the cultivation of talents meet enterprises’ needs.
In terms of international cooperation and exchange, the school has conducted in-depth exchanges and cooperation with several overseas universities such as the University of California Riverside, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and RWTH Aachen University, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Portsmouth, and Higher Education Learning Philosophy University. In recent years, more than 100 students have been selected to participate in academic exchanges at home and abroad, which has expanded the international influence of the school and the university, and broadened students’ horizons.
In terms of social services, relying on the characteristics of foreign language disciplines, the school strives to build a “three centers and one space” language service system, namely, the foreign language training service center, the translation consulting service center, the international development center and the foreign language maker-space. In July 2022, the foreign language training service center was certified by Jinan Municipal Bureau of Commerce and became a “Jinan Service Outsourcing Training Institution”. The system focuses on serving students and teaching, enriching classrooms and activities, building the campus culture brand, and at the same time strengthening the guidance of university students’ employment and entrepreneurship, improving the quality of service, and creating a new model of industry-university-research cooperation and development.
