Overview:
Geographic Information Science is an emerging technological discipline formed by the intersection of earth science, surveying and mapping science and computer science, which will embracing new challenges and changes driven by emerging information technologies such as the internet of things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and big data. The major focuses on the spatial information of the distribution of natural, social, economic, cultural and other phenomena on the surface and near the surface, and studies the basic theories and technical methods of acquiring, managing, expressing, processing and applying spatial information by using modern technologies such as computers, satellite positioning and remote sensing.
The teaching and scientific research team of Geographic Information Science is led by academician (specially appointed) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has platforms such as Shandong Collaborative Innovation Center for Smart City and Shandong Engineering and Technology Center for Digital City, Surveying and Land Information Institute and the Remote Sensing and GIS Research Center of Shandong Jianzhu University. Our professional teacher team has reasonable age structure, solid academic research foundation, and remarkable teaching and research achievements. The school of the major has a first-level discipline of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology for master’s degree granting (the second- level discipline of Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering is included), as well as professional master's degree programs in resources and environment and in civil and hydraulic engineering. The long-term cooperative relationship with the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Emergency Management Department, Wuhan University, SuperMap Software and other organizations can provide rich communication and employment opportunities for graduates of this major.
Cultivation Goal:
This major aims to cultivate practical senior specialized talents engaging in scientific research, application research, technological development, production management and administrative management related to GIS in government departments, financial institutions, companies, universities, planning and design institutes in the fields of cities, regions, resources, environment, transportation, population, housing, land, disasters, infrastructure and planning management. Our graduates are cultivated to have solid basic knowledge of mathematics, geoscience and computer software science, to master comprehensive theoretical knowledge of geography, resources and environment science, modern surveying and computer science, to have the skills of cartography, engineering surveying, resource and environment assessment and analysis, geographic information system software development, to understand the basic theories of spatial information acquisition, transmission, processing, application and information system engineering, as well as to be able to use remote sensing technology, geoscience analysis and planning related discipline analysis methods to design and develop geographic information systems and analyze and process spatial and dynamic information.

Student Cultivation:
In order to promote the cultivation of GIS professionals and expand the field of professional application, based on the characteristics of the major, the school fully relies on the teaching and research laboratory, and actively organizes students to participate in such large-scale competitions as the Challenge Cup, Internet Plus, National GIS Application Skills Competition and Development Competition. Our students have won the first prize and other outstanding achievements for many times, which greatly cultivated students' practical spirit and innovative consciousness. Meanwhile, the school actively invited well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to give professional academic reports which has greatly expanded students' academic vision and research ideas.
