1.Introduction to the school
The history of the School of Thermal Engineering can be traced back to 1956. The school’s original name was the Department of Urban Construction. It launched its first undergraduate programme in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) in 1978. In 1988, it launched an additional undergraduate programme in urban fuel gas. In the same year, the HVAC program passed for the first time the national disciplines evaluation. In 1998, the masters program in HVAC was set up for the first time in the University. The undergraduate programme in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics was approved in 2000. It was renamed the School of Thermal Engineering in 2004. The undergraduate programme in renewable energy science and engineering was set up in 2013. After the unremitting efforts made by several generations, the school has become a professional cultivation center and scientific research base for the fields of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering. The school adheres to the university motto of “striving for virtue and knowledge, building upon the foundation”. The school persists in taking “serving the society” as the tenet, and the cultivation of students’ innovation and entrepreneurial capacity as the orientation. The school has cultivated a great number of high-quality practical and professional technical students. Among many things, the school has realized the value in coordinated development in cultivating professionals who serve the local economy.
Currently, the school has the first-level discipline of thermal energy and power engineering and offers 3 undergraduate programmes, 4master programs and 1 doctoral program. In total, the school has more than 1,600 full-time undergraduate students, 130 postgraduate students and 70 faculty. The school has 2 Shandong provincial brand majors and characteristic key disciplines, and 2 provincial-level innovation research groups. In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 20 national level research projects and has obtained more than 30 patent authorizations. The school was also awarded the Second National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology as well as 8 First and Second Provincial Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology. The high-tech research achievements obtained by the school in ground source heat pumps, fuel gas and biomass energy utilization and other fields have been widely applied in key projects nationwide.
